Nebraska-Omaha Tops No. 9 Minnesota State Universi

Box Score MANKATO, Minn. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrapped up regular season action with a 4-2 non-conference win over ninth-ranked Minnesota State University Tuesday night at the Alltel Wireless Center in Mankato.

It was the second time this season UNO has beaten MSU, defeating them 6-3 on Dec. 18 at the Qwest Center Omaha.

With the win UNO moves to 15-16-4 overall and remains 11-13-4 in conference action, while Minnesota State University falls to 16-12-4 on the year.

After a scoreless first period UNO was able to get things going quickly in the second. A pair of goals less than five minutes into the frame gave UNO a 2-0 lead.

Freshman forward Matt Ambroz scored on the powerplay at 2:11, deflecting an Alain Goulet wrister from the blueline past MSU goalie Mike Zacharias. Goulet scored the second UNO goal less than two minutes later at 4:07, fitting a wrist shot from the point through traffic and into the back of the net. Freshman Joey Martin picked up the second helper on Ambroz's goal, while JJ Koehler got credit for the lone assist on Goulet's marker.

MSU was able to cut the UNO lead in half just before the second intermission on a Joel Hanson power-play goal at 19:54 of the period.

Senior forward Mick Lawrence extended the UNO lead to 3-1 at 9:21 of the third period, chipping in a loose puck from in front of the MSU goal. Sophomore Nick Fanto and freshman Nick Von Bokern picked up the assists on the score.

Skating with an extra man late in the third after pulling their goalie, MSU closed to within one on a Mick Berge goal at 18:37 of the period, but that is as close as they would get.

JJ Koehler applied the finishing touches to the UNO victory, scoring an empty-netter with just 41 seconds left to make the final 4-2.

Sophomore goalie Jeremie Dupont had a stellar night between the pipes for UNO, turning away 28 MSU shots and coming up with one big save after another.

UNO will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 29, as they play host to the U.S. National Development Team at the Qwest Center Omaha. The game will be an exhibition and is set for a 7:05 p.m. face off.
