Mavericks Skate Past Falcons at the Civic

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior forward Brandon Scero scored the game-winning goal and assisted on three others, helping to lift the Mavericks to a 5-3 victory over Bowling Green in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday at the Civic Auditorium.

The victory moves UNO to 14-13-4 on the year and 11-10-4 in CCHA play, while Bowling Green drops to 14-15-0 and 11-12-0. Both teams will go at it again tomorrow night, wrapping up their two-game series at the Civic Auditorium with a 7:05 p.m. face off Saturday.

It was the Mavericks who drew first blood on the evening. Junior Dan Charleston found a loose puck just in front of the Falcon's net and put it past BGSU goalie Jimmy Spratt at 12:01. Seniors Mick Lawrence and Screo got the assists on the goal.

BGSU drew even right before the first intermission, as Derek Whitmore's power-play goal at 14:55 of the first evened things at 1-1.

The Falcon's were able to grab a 2-1 lead in the second when John Mazzei beat UNO's Jerad Kaufmann at 2:39.

The Mavs squared things up 2-all 7:15 into the second frame. Freshman Joey Martin scored his fifth goal of the season, snapping one past Spratt from the circle. Scero and Lawrence picked up their second assists for the evening on Martin's score.

UNO capitalized on a two-man advantage at 15:00 of the second to take a
3-2 lead on a Tomas Klempa goal. Scero picked up his third assist of the night on the goal, while Sophomore Eddie Del Grosso collected the other helper.

Bowling Green was able to take advantage of a Maverick penalty and tie the game up 3-3 before the second intermission on a Dan Sexton power-play goal with just 21 seconds left in the period.

Scero broke the 3-3 tie 13:26 into the third, tipping a Del Grosso slapshot into the back of the BGSU net. Klempa picked up the second assist on the goal.

Sophomore JJ Koehler iced things for the Mavs, putting in an empty-netter with 25 second left in regulation, making the final score 5-3.
