Mavericks Pick Up Big 3-2 Win Over Lakers

Box Score Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The 19th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team snapped its four-game winless streak Friday night, coming from behind to beat the Lake Superior State University Lakers 3-2 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action at Taffy Abel Arena.

Junior goalie #Jeremie Dupont made 24 stops en route to his fourth win of the season while senior forward Tomas Klempa#'s power-play goal late in the second period helped to snap UNO's streak of five consecutive overtime games against the Lakers.

For just the seventh time in seventeen games this season, the Mavericks got on the board before their opponent. Junior defenseman #Eddie DelGrosso# beat LSSU goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson to give UNO a 1-0 lead at 7:40 of the opening period. Sophomore #Joey Martin# made a great centering pass to DelGrosso in the low slot, getting credit for the only assist on the score.

The Lakers came out fast in the second frame, knotting things up at one-all when Fred Cassiani grabbed a rebound off the back board and beat Dupont at 2:27 of the period. The Lakers then grabbed a 2-1 lead, capitalizing on a odd-man rush at 13:38.

But the Mavericks came charging right back. Junior forward #Nick Fanto# tied the game moments after the Lakers took the lead at 14:53.  Klempa then put the Mavs out in front 3-2 heading into the second intermission, going five-hole on Mahoney-Wilson at 16:49 of the second period.

Dupont stood tall in net for the Mavs during the final twenty minutes, turning away a late LSSU charge to preserve the 3-2 win. It was his first win since a 7-1 victory on Nov. 21 against Michigan State.

UNO moves to 10-4-3 overall and 6-4-3-2 in CCHA play while the Lakers' (4-7-6, 3-5-5-1) current slide continues.  They are now winless in six straight games. The two teams will wrap up their two-game conference series Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CST.
