KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The UNO Mavericks skated to a 2-2 tie with the Western Michigan University Broncos but snuck away with an extra point after winning their first-ever Central Collegiate Hockey Association shootout on Friday night at the Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Mavs won the game 3-2 after winning the shootout, 2-0.
UNO never held a lead in the game, twice fighting its way back from a one-goal deficit. Junior
Jeremie Dupont turned away a total of 22 shots on the night but came up biggest at the end, stoning both WMU shooters he faced in the shootout.
It will go down officially as a tie, but UNO earns two points for the shootout win to improve to 5-1-1, 1-1-1-1 (win-loss-tie-shootout win) in CCHA play. Western Michigan (1-5-3, 0-2-3-1) gets a single point for the tie.
For the third straight game the Mavericks allowed an opponent to jump out to an early lead, falling behind the Broncos 1-0 at the 3:58 mark of the first on an Adam Flink score. UNO fought its way back to even things up with a
Tomas Klempa power-play goal 11:36 into the first.
The second period was almost a mirror image of the first. WMU came out fast and grabbed a 2-1 lead at 4:46 of the stanza only to see the Mavericks tie things up before the second intermission on a
Nick Fanto even-strength marker at 16:24.
UNO controlled play for a majority of the third, out shooting WMU 11-2 in the final frame, but were unable to get anything by Bronco netminder Jerry Kuhn.
In overtime UNO again seemed to be in control of the action, applying pressure in the WMU zone and getting off three more shots. Kuhn, however, was up to the challenge, turning away everything the Mavs threw at him and forcing the game into a shootout.
Dupont stopped both WMU shots he faced in the shootout, while sophomore
Joey Martin and senior
Dan Charleston were able to convert for the Mavericks and give them a 2-0 shootout win.
For the third straight game junior defenseman
Eddie DelGrosso registered two assists, pushing his team-leading assist total to eight.
