COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Mavericks let a two-goal lead slip away in the third period Saturday night as the Ohio State Buckeye stormed past them 3-2 to complete the two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.
Sophomore #
Eric Olimb# capped off a three-point weekend with a goal early in the second period, while senior #
Tomas Klempa#'s second period power-play goal extended his point streak to eleven games.
This weekend's sweep was the first time UNO was swept in a regular-season CCHA series since Northern Michigan turned the trick last February. Saturday's setback drops the Mavs to 9-4-1 overall and 5-4-1-1 in conference action.
For just the fifth time in fourteen games this year the Mavericks were able to get on the scoreboard before their opponent. Olimb gave UNO a 1-0 lead when he poked in a lose puck past OSU's Dustin Carlson at the 2:08 mark of the second. Klempa pushed the Maverick advantage to 2-0 before the second intermission with a power-play marker scored at 11:24.
For the second night in-a-row UNO took a lead late into the third period, but thanks to some outstanding goaltending by OSU's Carlson the Buckeyes were able to creep back into the game.
Hunter Bishop cut the Maverick lead in half, 2-1, on a slap shot from the high slot that beat UNO goalie #
Jerad Kaufmann# at 4:02 of the final stanza. OSU then knotted the game at two-all at 13:33 on a John Albert score and took the lead five minutes later on Albert's second goal of the night at 18:33.
Trailing 3-2, UNO pulled its goalie for the final 1:34 of regulation in an attempt to even the game, but came up empty.
The Mavericks outshot the Buckeyes 46 to 23 on the night, including a 40 to 16 advantage in the final two periods alone.
UNO returns home next weekend, Dec. 5-6, to take on conference-rival Alaska in a two-game CCHA series at the Qwest Center Omaha.
