BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Nebraska-Omaha goaltender
Jeremie Dupont made a career-high 41 saves, but the Mavericks were unable to parlay the performance into a victory, dropping their Central Collegiate Hockey Association opener 3-2 to the Falcons of Bowling Green State University on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The loss is the first of the season for the Mavericks who fall to to 4-1-0 on the year and 0-1-0-0 in CCHA play. BGSU evens its record at 3-3-1 on the season and 2-1-0-0 in conference action.
The Falcons put the Mavericks on their heels early in the first, grabbing a 2-0 lead before the opening intermission on even-strength markers by David Solway and Dan Sexton.
After a scoreless second frame, the Mavs came out fast in the third, cutting the Falcons lead in half, 2-1, when senior
Tomas Klempa scored just 37 seconds into the period. They evened things at 2-all midway through the third when
Joey Martin tipped an Eddie DelGrosso blast from the blue line past BGSU goalie Jimmy Spratt. Junior
Jeric Agosta picked up the second assist on Klempa's goal while freshman
Alex Hudson got credit for the other helper on Martin's.
But the Falcons rallied late as Sexton scored his second goal of the night 16:44 into the final frame. BGSU closed the door from there, holding off the Mavericks and their extra attacker for the better part of the final two minutes to claim a 3-2 win.
UNO managed to stay perfect for the year on the penalty kill, stopping all six of BGSU's man-advantages, despite being outshot 44-20 on the night.
