Mavericks Sweep Lakers

Box Score Box Score

OMAHA, Neb- The University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team used goals by five different players to earn a 5-2 win over Mercyhurst College Saturday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.

With the win, UNO improves to 4-0-0 on the year, its best start since opening the season 4-0-0 in 2004-05. On the other hand, the Lakers of Mercyhurst dropped their sixth straight to open the season and head home to Erie, Penn. 0-6-0.

The Mavericks jumped on the Lakers early, opening a sizeable lead with three goals in a 2:03 span in the first. Sophomore Matt Ambroz converted a power-play goal at 5:43 of the first, followed by even-strength goals by freshman Jordan Willert at 6:50 and junior Jeric Agosta at 7:46.  The three goals broke the old school record of 2:31 set during the 2003-04 season.

Tomas Klempa would extend the UNO lead to 4-0, beating Mercyhurst goaltender Max Strang at 10:52.  But the Lakers would cut into the Maverick lead with just under two minutes left in the first when Dan Bremner snuck a short-handed goal past UNO goalkeeper Jerad Kaufmann at 18:24.

Senior Dan Charleston applied the exclamation point for the Mavericks in the second frame, picking up a rebound off a Rich Purslow shot and chipping it over a sprawling Strang to put UNO back up by four, 5-1.
The Lakers fought back to within three before the second intermission, using Steve Cameron's marker at 19:02 to make it 5-2 after two.

Mercyhurst was unable to close the gap in the third, as neither team was able to find the net.

Kaufmann picked up his second win on the season and was named the game's third star, stopping 27 of the 29 shots he faced on the night.

The Mavericks will open Central Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend, Oct. 31 – Nov. 1, when they travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Bowling Green Falcons in a two-game series. Faceoff for both nights is set for 6:05 p.m. Central.
