The Mavs will head into the North Central Conference's closing week with a guaranteed spot in the tournament and a chance to host the four-team event. Seniors
Heidi Bargmann,
Jessica Dotson and
Stephanie Kirby will be honored as they play in their final regular season homegame this Saturday against South Dakota. Senior Day ceremonies will take place at 12:50, ten minutes before kickoff at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben.
The top four teams will be decided Saturday afternoon as all eight NCC teams will have their final conference games played by then. The Mavs need a win and a tie or loss by Minnesota State, Mankato, which plays St. Cloud State. The Mavs (13-1-2) fell out of the top spot when they tied South Dakota State last Sunday and MSU defeated North Dakota to sit alone at the top.
About the Coyotes
South Dakota comes into the weekend at 8-8-0 and 3-3-0 in the NCC. The Coyotes need a win to have any chance of getting into the tournament. Leading scorer Teri Atkinson has 16 points (7 goals, 2 assists) after scoring two goals against Augustana Sunday and goalkeeper Candice Martinez is allowing 1.72 goals per game. Head Coach Jessica Maddox is in her fourth year and has a record of 34-35-1. Overall, the Mavericks hold a 4-0 lead in the series record.
On deck for the Mavs
The Mavs will finish the regular season Nov. 2 with a trip to Rockhurst and then will look forward to post season play the following weekend at the NCC tournament.
Mavericks will win the regular season
Last year UNO led the conference wire-to-wire. This year they found themselves down, them up and now down again with the MSU Mavericks at the top with a chance to clinch. A UNO win Saturday, though, and a MSU loss will give the UNO Mavs full share of the regular season title and a MSU tie would give both teams a share of the title. UNO would hold the tie-breaker in that case after winning 4-3 in the regular season match up.
The third and fourth seeds are still up for grabs and UND has a chance to take the No. 2 seed with a UNO loss and Fighting Sioux win. SCSU and Augustana are eliminated from NCC postseason play.
Mavs stay put in the polls
After a win and a tie last weekend, the Mavs remained in the No. 8 spot in the NSCAA/adidas national poll released Monday. Metro State stayed at the top and Christian Brothers moved ahead of the Mavs to No. 7. Truman State continued its climb, now in the 11th spot and Minnesota State, Mankato moved into the No. 25 spot. North Dakota fell out after a tie and a loss.
