Omaha Softball headlines 2026 Summit League awards

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –– Omaha Softball shined, placing 10 student-athletes on the 2026 All-Summit League Teams, it was announced Tuesday. Marra Cramer was named the conference defensive player of the year, the first outfielder to earn the honor, Maddia Groff earned her second straight conference pitcher of the year nod –– the third straight year a Maverick earned the honor –– and head coach Mike Heard was crowned the league's coach of the year, his second honor (2024).

Six of the Mavericks' 10 All-Summit honoree were named to the first team in Groff, Alexis Wiggins, Taylor Sedlacek, Bailey Sample, Cramer and Sammy Schmidt. Katherine Johnson was named to the Second Team All-Summit. Rylinn Groff, Alyson Edwards and Ava Rongisch earned Honorable Mention All-Summit honors.

Cramer earns her first Summit marquee accolade as Defensive Player of the Year, the first outfielder and third Maverick in the five year history of the award to earn the hardware. With a perfect fielding percentage in center field this season, Cramer has recorded 29 put outs in 30 chances with one assist in league play, including a haul of highlight-reel grabs.

Groff has named been named the Summit League's pitcher of the year in back-to-back campaigns, the first conference pitcher to repeat in consecutive years since Nicole Terpstra (DePaul) won four straight from 1996-99. A Maverick has now won the honor in three straight campaigns (Kamryn Meyer - 2024). Groff owns a conference best 1.22 ERA in league games, posting a record of 8-4 with four complete games, one being a solo shutout. In 63.0 innings of work vs. Summit foes, Groff, an Omaha native, has struck out 81 batters, holding opponents to a .170 average at the plate.

Heard, in his fifth season leading Omaha Softball, was voted coach of the year by his peers for the second time (2024). The lifelong Nebraskan coached the Mavericks to the program's second straight regular-season title, first outright and second straight No. 1 seed in the Summit League Championship. Omaha leads the conference in average (.333), runs (129), home runs (24), RBI (122), total bases (253), slugging percentage (.570) and on-base percentage (.454). Defensively, Omaha owns a conference fielding percentage of .968 with five turned double plays. The Mavericks' pitching staff owns a 1.59 ERA with eight shutouts in 17 games. Omaha has struck out 103 opponents in 110 innings with an opponent batting average of .200.

Under Heard's tutelage, Omaha has been ranked in all 13 mid-major rankings this season, coming in no lower than fifth at any point this season. The Mavericks enter this week's conference tournament as the three-time defending champions.

Maddia Groff - Pitcher: Second All-Summit honor.
Alexis Wiggins - Pitcher: First All-Summit honor. 1.75 ERA. 10-7 (appearances-start) in league play. 6-0 record. Three complete games, three shutouts (two solo). .219 opponent batting average.
Taylor Sedlacek - Shortstop: First All-Summit honor. Top 10 in league in RBI (16). Has hit five home runs in Summit contests. .569 slugging mark.
Bailey Sample - Third Base: First All-Summit honor. Top four in Summit in RBI (19). Tied for second with six doubles. Led Omaha with .511 batting average.
Marra Cramer - Center Field: Second All-Summit honor. .352 BA, 13 RBI, four home runs. Seven extra-base hits.
Sammy Schmidt - Right Field: Second All-Summit honor. 1.118 OPS, .356 BA, eight extra-base hits, including three triples and 17 RBI.

Second Team All-Summit
Katherine Johnson - Second Base: Second All-Summit honor. 1.107 OPS, .357 BA, 22 RBI, nine extra-base hits, four home runs, one stolen base.

Honorable Mention All-Summit
Rylinn Groff - Catcher: First All-Summit honor. Six RBI, .493 OBP (second on team). One double play turned and two caught stealing defensively.
Alyson Edwards - First Base: First All-Summit honor. .378 BA, three homers, one double and 13 RBI.
Ava Rongisch - Left Field: Fourth All-Summit honor. Five extra-base hits, one home run, 12 RBI, .464 OBP and .938 fielding percentage.

The Mavericks begin the 2026 Summit League Championship on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT vs. (4) South Dakota or (5) Kansas City in Minneapolis.
