KANSAS CITY – Omaha Women's Tennis beat Kansas City, 4-3, on the road on Sunday afternoon.
With this win, the Mavericks (15-8) move to 5-0 in Summit League play with a chance to win their first-ever regular-season title on Saturday, April 18.
Freshman Shelby Smith (Leawood, Kan.) clinched the win for the Mavs in the No. 4 flight. Smith took the first set, 6-2, from Kansas City's Luciana Braga before taking the second set 6-4.
Junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mo.) and sophomore Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) claimed wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 flights, respectively, to put Omaha in position to win. Buckels defeated Amal Gait 6-4, 6-2, while Kock blanked Catherine Chrobak in the first set and won the second set 6-4.
With their doubles win today, Kock and fellow sophomore Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) are now tied for first in the program's single-season doubles win record with 19.
"Proud of the group today with their effort," head coach Adam Summitt said. "The conditions were ripe for Kansas City to pull away. It was their senior day, we were on the road, there were facility issues, but the team did a good job worrying about what they could control. All matches were played at a high level. The matches Kansas City won, they truly played well. Looking forward to next weekend as we have a shot to win the regular season title."
The Mavericks have one home match left in the regular season. Omaha will host No. 63 Denver at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, April 18, as the two teams battle it out for the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the Summit League tournament.
