LINCOLN, Neb. — Omaha Softball's Katherine Johnson hit a two-run home run Sunday, but Nebraska hit three homers of its own as the Huskers defeated the Mavericks 10-2.
No. 10/5 Nebraska swept the two-game weekend series as it also won 4-1 Saturday.
Omaha (14-6) put together scoring threats in each of the first three innings before Johnson launched her fifth homer of the season in the third inning.
Omaha had two on with one out in the top of the first when Johnson singled to right. Rylinn Groff tried to score from second base but was thrown out at the plate.
Omaha also had two on with one out in the second after singles from Alyson Edwards and Ava Rongisch, but a popout and a groundout ended that threat.
Nebraska (18-5) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second with five unearned runs. That included two-out, two-run home runs from Jordy Frahm and Hannah Camenzind.
Johnson pulled Omaha within 5-2 with her homer, and Omaha also had a scoring chance in the fifth when Taylor Sedlacek led off with a double. But Nebraska pulled away with four runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
Johnson and Edwards each finished with two hits to lead the Omaha offense. Starter Grace Hornbuckle took the loss and is now 3-2.
Omaha will be back on the road next weekend as it begins a tournament in St. George, Utah, against BYU on Friday.
