ST. GEORGE, Utah — Omaha Softball started its weekend at the Trailblazer Classic with a no-hitter and a comeback victory.
Maddia Groff tossed a five-inning no-hitter in a 9-0 victory over BYU. Later in the day, Omaha rallied from four runs down to edge host Utah Tech 6-5 in eight innings.
Groff earned wins in both games as she improved her record to 6-3. She allowed only two baserunners and struck out six in her no-hitter. The left-hander then entered the Utah Tech game in the sixth and pitched three perfect innings.
Meanwhile, the Omaha offense hit five home runs on the day, including a three-run shot by Katherine Johnson that helped force extra innings against Utah Tech.
Omaha (16-6) bolted to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning against BYU (6-18) as Taylor Sedlacek hit a two-run home run and Sammy Schmidt added a three-run shot. For Sedlacek, it was her team-best eighth homer this season.
Ava Rongisch added a three-run homer of her own in the third inning to make it 8-0. Schmidt's run-scoring single in the fifth completed her four-RBI game.
In its second game, Omaha dug a 5-1 deficit as Utah Tech (10-16) scored in each of the first four innings.
Omaha cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth on an Alyson Edwards home run, then Johnson tied it in the sixth with a three-run home run.
Omaha took its first lead in the eighth when Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by Haley Wilwerding. In the bottom of the eighth, Omaha ended the game by turning a 3-6 double play.
Omaha will play BYU and Utah Tech again Saturday with the first game beginning at noon CT.
