Softball splits final day of Trailblazer Classic

Mavericks take the field at Maverick Park for the first time this season on Friday

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Omaha Softball finished play at the Trailblazer Classic with a 3-1 record as it split a pair of games Saturday.

Omaha (17-7) rolled to a 12-2 five-inning win over Utah Tech after falling to BYU 9-8.

Alexis Wiggins threw a one-hitter against Utah Tech, allowing only a single in the fourth inning.

Omaha scored four times in the second inning and never trailed. Omaha added three runs in the fourth, capped by a two-run single from Bailey Sample.

Then in the fifth, Sammy Schmidt hit a three-run home run and Taylor Sedlacek added a two-run homer. It was Sedlacek's team-best ninth home run of the season.

Schmidt also had an RBI single in the second inning as she drove in four runs. It was the second straight day she had four RBI in a game.

Against BYU, Ava Rongisch hit two home runs to center field, including a grand slam in the sixth inning, but BYU countered by hitting five homers to outscore the Mavericks in the first game of the day.

BYU's Hailey Morrow homered in the fourth and fifth innings as the Cougars built a 5-1 lead.

Rongisch then hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Her grand slam with one out in the sixth gave Omaha a 7-6 lead.

But a two-run home run in the top of the seventh by Bre Townsend put BYU back in front. Omaha opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back doubles by Sedlacek and Sample, but the Mavericks stranded the tying run at second base.

Maddia Groff no-hit BYU in a 9-0 win Friday, but she allowed eight earned runs Saturday and was tagged with the loss.

Omaha opens Summit League play Friday with its home opener against North Dakota State. Tickets are on sale now at OMavs.com/Tickets or by calling 402-554-MAVS.
