Women’s Tennis sweeps Chicago State

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis swept its fourth opponent of the season with a 7-0 win over Chicago State on Friday.

The Mavericks (7-6) won the doubles point with ease. Both the No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) and Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and the No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Corinne Barber (Lincoln, Neb.) and Grace Greenwald (Omaha, Neb.) won their matches 6-0 to secure the doubles point.

Wiese was the last Maverick to win her match. She fell in the first set, 6-3, to Chicago State's Camila Sanchez in the No. 2 flight. In the second, Wiese fought to a 6-4 win to force a third set. Since Omaha had already clinched the match, a 10-point tie break was played instead of a full third set. The tie break saw constant back-and-forth with neither player establishing a dominant lead. Sanchez was up 9-8 for a potential match point until Wiese dug deep to win two in a row and close the set 11-9.

Junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mo.) battled in the No. 1 match to earn her seventh singles win of the spring. Buckels won 6-4 in the first set against CSU's Karolina Skowronska. Buckels was down 4-1 in the second set when she mounted a comeback that would win her the match. She tied the set 4-4 and later 6-6 to force the tiebreaker. Buckels went up 5-1 in the tiebreaker, which she ultimately won 7-2.

"Solid start to the weekend," head coach Adam Summitt said. "Happy with the effort and results. We continue to play great doubles, and it was great to have Corinne (Barber) and Grace (Greenwald) get a win. Chicago State competed well in singles. Our team bounced back from a weekend off. We will have a real fight tomorrow at Drake and we are looking forward to the challenge."

Omaha will hit the road tomorrow to face Drake at 5:30 p.m. CT in Des Moines, Iowa. Live stats and a live stream will be available for the match.
