OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis defeated Oral Roberts, 6-1, at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (12-8, 2-0 Summit League) have not beaten the Golden Eagles (4-14, 1-1) with such a wide margin since 2018, when the Mavs won 6-1 at home.
Freshman Shelby Smith (Leawood, Kan.) clinched the win for the Mavs with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 4 flight over ORU's Cassie Cervantes. The freshman has not won a full match since Feb. 20, when the Mavericks swept Western Illinois.
Sophomore Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) defeated Cecilia Franzin of ORU in the No. 2 flight. Wiese took the first set 6-1 and blanked Franzin in the second set. This is the second time this season that the sophomore has won a singles match while dropping only one game.
In doubles, Wiese and fellow sophomore Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) recorded their 17th doubles win this spring with their 6-3 win over Oral Roberts' Franzin and Ava Goodell. The dynamic duo is now tied for fourth in single-season doubles wins with seven other players in Omaha history.
"Great win today," head coach Adam Summitt said. "We played one of our more complete matches in the last month. Oral Roberts can be a feisty team, and I thought we did a great job controlling the flow of the matches. We need to stretch this level of tennis out for the remaining matches, as every opponent will be a challenge in its own right.
The Mavericks will head on the road for a three-match stint starting at North Dakota on Saturday, April 4. Play is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. CT.
