OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis opened Summit League play with a 4-3 win over St. Thomas at home on Friday.
The Mavericks (11-8, 1-0 Summit League) came out swinging in doubles and claimed the first point of the match quickly against the Tommies (5-8, 0-3).
The sophomore duo of Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) and Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) won their 16th match of the dual season with a 6-3 win over St. Thomas' Emilia Korseth and Caroline Lindahl in the No. 1 flight. The pair are now tied with Lindsay Henjum (2004-05) and Maggie Russell (2005-06) for most doubles wins in a single season.
Junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin Mo.) clinched the win for the Mavericks with her 10th singles win of the spring. Buckels and Korseth went to a tie in the first set, which Buckels won 7-4 to win the opening set. The junior hit her stride in the second set to win 6-3 in the No. 1 match and claim another win for Omaha.
"Any conference match in the Summit League will always be close and competitive. This match did not disappoint," head coach Adam Summitt said. "St. Thomas has improved from last season, and it showed in their singles matches today. They are gritty and competitive. We had to play well to win, and we did just well enough to pull away. We will need to regroup and go to battle against Oral Roberts tomorrow. I have a feeling it will be another close battle with them."
