OMAHA, Neb. — Maddia Groff tossed a five-hitter to lead Omaha Softball to a 3-2 win over Creighton in front of a crowd of 717 at Connie Claussen Field on Wednesday night.
Omaha (20-7) led 3-2 throughout the final three innings as the Mavericks took the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth.
"We probably didn't play our best game there. We kind of lost our approach offensively a little bit," head coach Mike Heard said. "But it's nice to still be able to win games when you feel like you don't play your best."
Creighton (15-17), which is off to a 7-2 start in BIG EAST play, threatened early as it had runners at second and third with one out in both the second and third innings.
Groff got a strikeout and a flyout to end the second, but the Bluejays took a 2-0 lead in the third when Kaelan Schultz doubled down the left-field line.
After Schultz's double, Groff retired 13 of the last 15 batters she faced as she improved to 8-4.
"You could tell she had a little adrenaline going," Heard said of his pitcher.
Omaha cut its deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third as Taylor Sedlacek scored on a wild pitch, then the Mavericks took the lead in the fourth.
Sammy Schmidt tied it as she led off the inning with a home run to center. It was the outfielder's sixth homer this season, and Omaha has now hit a homer in each of its last 16 games.
"That was huge," Heard said. "She's been doing that for us all year. She put a good swing on a good pitch."
Ava Rongisch followed with a single, and she later scored the go-ahead run on a groundout by Bailey Sample.
"Even the smallest things can make the biggest difference," Schmidt said of the fourth inning. "Just trying to get a base hit can start off an inning just right."
Rongisch had three of Omaha's seven hits on the night.
Omaha continues its homestand when it faces Kansas City at 4 p.m. CT Friday.
