OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis swept Western Illinois at home on Friday night.
The Mavericks' (6-5) win streak is up to four with this win over the Leatherbacks (2-7).
Junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mo.) secured the win for the Mavericks with a victory in the No. 1 flight. Buckels defeated WIU's Mana Fawcett 6-4 in both the first and second sets to earn her fourth singles win in a row.
Freshman Shelby Smith (Leawood, Kan.) was the last match to finish. The freshman lost the first set, 7-5, to Western Illinois' Jessica Hess, but she did not shy away from the challenge ahead of her. Smith evened the score with a 6-3 win in the second set and then pushed the 10-point tie break into extra points with a 13-11 win. Her winning streak is also up to four matches.
Sophomores Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) and Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) mounted an incredible comeback in the No. 1 doubles match. The duo was down 5-1 and close to losing the doubles point when they went on a winning streak and won five straight games to bring the score to 6-5. WIU's team of Fawcett and Hess tied the match at 6-6, but Wiese and Kock won the tiebreaker, 7-5, and secured the doubles point with it.
"Really tough match for us tonight," head coach Adam Summitt said. "Even though we swept Western Illinois, we were near defeat in a lot of matches. Katelynn and Nina came in clutch in doubles. Down 5-1, they fought off a few match points to come back and win it for us. In singles, Western Illinois was very disciplined and made us earn everything. At the end of the day, I'm proud of the team for pulling it off."
The Mavericks will have a day off before making the trip downtown to play Creighton on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. CT.
