SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - (RV) Omaha Softball placed two Kwik Star peak performance honorees as
Bailey Sample picked up her first Peak Performer of the Week nod and
Maddia Groff was named the Peak Pitcher of the Week for the seventh time.
The Mavericks, off to the best start in the program's DI era at 9-0, were ranked the top mid-major team this week in the D1 Softball Mid-Major Rankings for the first time. Omaha received national top 25 votes in the NFCA/GOROUT DI Top 25 Coaches Poll and the D1Softball.com Poll. Omaha is currently 26th in the Massey Rating.
The duo of Sample and Groff helped the Mavericks to a 5-0 weekend in San Diego, sweeping the FDU Knights and taking a game each from Southern Utah, Utah Tech and Boise State.
Sample was a force offensively, recording nine hits over the weekend with a trio of multi-hit games. The Bradley transfer drove in five RBI and recorded a home run in the win Sunday over FDU. She finished with seven runs batted in last week.
In the circle, Groff was stellar for the Black and Red, making her third and fourth starts of the season. Groff struck out 17 batters over 11.2 innings of work. In 43 batters faced, she allowed just one earned run and closed out her weekend with a season-best 12 strikeouts in a shutout of Boise State.
Omaha Softball returns to action this weekend in Troy, Alabama, beginning Friday, Feb. 20 at 8:30 a.m. CT.
