SAN DIEGO - Omaha Softball pitched a pair of shutouts Saturday at the USD/UCSD tournament to remain unbeaten.
The eight straight wins to open a season surpasses the program's best start since becoming a Division I program. The 2013 team had the previous best start at 7-0.
Since last season, Omaha's regular-season win streak stands at 10 games, dating back to April 26, 2025 at South Dakota State (9-8).
Omaha cruised to a 14-0 five-inning win over FDU before blanking Boise State 2-0.
Against Boise State (6-4), left-hander
Maddia Groff turned in her best outing of the young season, throwing a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by
Sammy Schmidt. Boise loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but then Groff recorded her seventh strikeout of the night to end that threat.
Omaha tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when
Ava Rongisch's two-out triple scored
Katherine Johnson. Rongisch and Schmidt had two hits each to lead Omaha's offense against the Broncos.
In the win over FDU (0-3),
Alyson Edwards turned in a starring role at the plate and in the circle.
Edwards homered in her first two at-bats to finish with four RBI. She also pitched the final two innings of a one-hitter.
Edwards started the scoring in the second inning with a three-run homer. Two batters later,
Taylor Sedlacek hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot, as Omaha went on to put up eight runs in the inning.
Omaha hit two more home runs in the third as Edwards had a solo shot before Johnson hit a three-run blast. Johnson also has three home runs this season.
In all, 10 Mavericks had hits against FDU, while
Alexis Wiggins and Edwards combined to retire the first 12 batters. The only baserunners for FDU were a walk and a single in the fifth inning.
Wiggins and Groff each improve to 3-0.
Omaha wraps up play in San Diego with a single game Sunday against the Knights.
