Women’s Tennis bests Missouri State

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha Women's Tennis beat Missouri State, 6-1, at home on Friday night.

The Mavericks (4-5) jumped to an early lead with a win in doubles. Sophomores Katelynn Kock (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Nina Wiese (Flushing, N.Y.) opened play with a strong 6-1 win over Elsie Jackson and Raluca Puscas in the No. 1 flight. Senior Summer Shannon (Plano, Texas) and junior Khayli Buckels (Ballwin, Mo.) closed out the point for Omaha with their 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot over Matilde Ercoli and Leticia Caldararo.

Buckels win over Gonlusen in the No. 1 spot secured the win for the Mavericks. Buckels and Gonlusen battled in the first set with eventually went to a tiebreak which Buckels won 7-5 to take the first set. The second set was a different story with a 6-0 win for Buckels to secure the match.

Freshman Corinne Barber (Lincoln, Neb.) fought her way to the first dual singles win of her collegiate career in the No. 6 flight. Barber fell in the first set to Missouri State's Leticia Caldararo, 7-5. In the second set, she came back to win 6-4. Since the match had already been clinched for the Mavericks, the third set was a 10-point tie break instead of the traditional third set. Barber battled to the very end for a 10-8 win.

"Fantastic win tonight," head coach Adam Summitt said. "We came out firing in doubles and did our best controlling the tempo. I know Missouri State was battling some illness within their team, but they competed hard in singles. The scores do not reflect how close it was. I am proud of the effort of everyone, especially Katelynn and Corinne coming through in third sets."

The Mavericks' homestand continues tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. CT against Northern Iowa at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. Live stats and a live stream will be available.
