OMAHA, Neb. - Simon Latkoczy made 25 saves and
Trevor Wong scored twice in the final 16 minutes as Omaha Hockey earned a 3-1 win over (RV) Colorado College on Friday night at Baxter Arena.
The win increases Omaha's point total to 15 in the NCHC standings. Omaha entered Friday tied with Colorado College for eighth in the league standings.
Each of Wong's goals gave Omaha a two-goal advantage. His empty-netter with 40.1 seconds was his fifth of the season and helped Omaha (9-16, 5-10) snap a three-game skid. Wong also had an assist on Omaha's first goal.
Friday's game, which was 1-0 early in the third period, was a matchup between two of the top goalies in the NCHC. While Latkoczy finished with 25 saves, Colorado College's Kaidan Mbereko had 20 saves.
On Friday, Colorado College (9-10-3, 3-6-3) put early pressure on Latkoczy as he made six saves in the first five minutes. It appeared Colorado College grabbed the lead with 12:23 left in the first period, but the Tigers' goal was nullified by an offsides call.
Omaha also had a potential goal disallowed in the final minute of the first period as it was determined that a whistle stopped play before the puck crossed the goal line.
But Omaha then created good opportunities as it had five shots on goal in the first six minutes of the second period, including two breakaway chances that were stopped by Mbereko.
It stayed scoreless until the Mavericks finally broke through with 7:44 left in the period on a power-play goal by Adian de Le Gorgendiere, who ripped a shot from near the blue line through traffic and into the back of the net.
It was his third goal of the season.
Omaha added to its lead with 15:14 left to play when Wong redirected a shot by
Griffin Ludtke past Mbereko.
Latkoczy had made 24 saves before Colorado College ended the shutout with a goal with 4:32 left.
Omaha locked up the win when Wong skated in for the empty-netter in the final minute.
