OXFORD, Ohio - Simon Latkoczy shut out Miami (Ohio) through the first two periods before the RedHawks scored three times in the third as the Mavericks dropped a 3-0 decision Friday night.
Latkoczy, who was the NCHC goalie of the year last season, was making his first appearance since Dec. 12 as he returned from injury. He finished the night with 22 saves.
He kept Omaha (8-15, 4-9 NCHC) close, but for the first time this season the Mavericks were shut out.
Omaha controlled possession much of the first period when it outshot Miami 16-11. Omaha then was able to kill off two power plays in the first seven minutes of the second period.
The Mavericks had only nine shots on goal in the game's first 34 minutes, but Omaha applied pressure with six shots on goal in the last six minutes of the second period.
Myles Hilman had one of Omaha's best scoring chances during that stretch.
Miami (13-8-2, 4-7-2), which had a shot bounce off the post late in the second period, broke through early in the third.
After Latkoczy made a save on an initial shot, Miami's Kocha Delic scored on a second opportunity 57 seconds into the period for the night's first goal.
Miami, which lost a 1-0 decision to Arizona State in its previous game last weekend, added an insurance goal five minutes later, taking advantage of an Omaha turnover.
Miami added an empty netter with 1:54 left.
Omaha finished with a 40-34 shot advantage, but only 19 of its shots were on goal.
Omaha and Miami will continue their series at 5 p.m. CT Saturday.
