SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Eight Omaha softball players earned All-Summit League honors, it was announced Tuesday. For the second straight year, a Maverick was named Summit League Pitcher of the Year with sophomore
Maddia Groff earning the honor. Senior shortstop
Maggie O'Brien was crowned Summit League Defensive Player of the Year.
Earning spots on the First Team All-Summit were M. Groff, O'Brien and infielder
Sydney Thomason. Outfielders
Marra Cramer and
Ava Rongisch were named to the Second Team and infielder
Katherine Johnson, outfielder
Sammy Schmidt and infielder
Haley Wilwerding were named Honorable Mention All-Summit.
Omaha native
Maddia Groff return home to the Metro in 2025, transferring in from Southern Illinois. In 31 appearances this season, Groff made 25 starts logging a record of 23-4 overall with two saves in the regular season, including a mark of 11-1 in conference play. Heading into the Summit League tournament, Groff owns a conference-best ERA of 0.93 allowing just 10 earned runs in over 75 innings pitched in league play. Overall, Groff held batters to a .176 average at the plate over 580 recorded at-bats. Her overall ERA of 1.32 ranks eighth in Division I.
Groff was in the circle for five shutouts, including a solo and combined perfect game. She tossed six complete games in 2025.
The Marian grad recorded 225 strikeouts thus far in 2025, the seventh most in the nation.
Four-year starter
Maggie O'Brien has played in 200 games in black and red and is one of two 2025 seniors, joining
Sydney Thomason, to start in every game of their collegiate careers. O'Brien averaged .299 overall, driving in 23 RBI with 12 extra-base hits. The everyday shortstop scored 33 runs for the Mavericks and belted 46 hits. With a .383 slugging percentage, O'Brien went 12-for-13 in stolen base attempts in 2025.
The Summit League Defensive Player of the Year for the first time in her career, O'Brien follows
Lynsey Tucker (2024) as Mavericks to earn the plaudit. With a .945 fielding percentage, O'Brien recorded 109 catches for 42 putouts and 61 assists and was instrumental in turning six double plays this season. O'Brien recorded a season-best four assists twice, against Seton Hall (Feb. 14, 2025) and Loyola Marymount (Feb. 28, 2025).
Leading the team with a .357 average at the plate, senior
Sydney Thomason belted a team-high 13 home runs and is one shy of tying for fifth-most in a single-season at Omaha. Logging 53 RBI, Thomason owns 14 doubles and a total of 50 hits in 2025. She has scored 34 runs and owns 15 multi-hit games (team lead). Thomason has two games on her ledger this season of five or more RBI and closes the regular season having reached base safely in seven straight games.
Cramer earns a spot on the Second Team All-Summit League after 18 starts in league play (all games). The Liberty, Mo. product totaled nine RBI off of four doubles, two triples and one home run against league foes. More than half of her hits in conference play were for extra bases. Scoring seven runs, Cramer owns a league OBP of .293 and has walked four times. Cramer is one of four Maverick everyday fielders with perfect fielding percentages.
Rongisch, with a .472 slugging percentage, knocked in 34 hits, including eight doubles and six home runs for 27 RBI. Rongisch ended the regular season with hits in back-to-back games and tallied a five-game hitting streak during the campaign. Rongisch tied with
Emma Durr fourth-longest reached base streak on Omaha's 2025 club, reaching base at least once in 11 consecutive battles.
Sophomore
Katherine Johnson mashed 11 doubles, five homers and one triple in 2025 en route to Summit League Honorable Mention recognition. The Omaha native finished the regular season with an on-base percentage of .325 and finished 4-for-6 in stolen base tries.
Sammy Schmidt averaged .274 overall with four home runs and 20 RBI.
Haley Wilwerding homered eight times and recorded a slugging mark of .500.
