Softball closes regular season at Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - Omaha softball, the top seed in the upcoming Summit League Championship, closes-out the 2025 regular season Friday, May 2 with a doubleheader at Wisconsin, facing the Badgers for the first time since Feb. 14, a 7-0 Omaha victory in Fort Meyers, Fla. Both games of the twin bill will air on Big Ten Plus.

The Mavericks have won nine of their last ten games and closed league play with a series victory at South Dakota State. Due to the NCAA's reclassification rule for transitioning institutions, St. Thomas is ineligible for postseason play. Omaha, currently in second in the Summit League standings, has secured the top seed in the conference tournament. With a North Dakota State victory against St. Thomas this weekend, Omaha would clinch a share of the Summit League Regular Season Championship, with additional scenarios in the mix.

Wednesday it was revealed that Omaha ranked No. 21 in the D1 Softball Mid-Major Rankings, the fifth time this season Mike Heard's Mavericks were ranked and the second straight week Omaha came in at No. 21.

The Mavericks have made waves in the national statistical rankings this season as Omaha ranks nationally in doubles per game (31st), fielding percentage (6th) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (8th).

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Maddia Groff's ERA of 1.33 is the sixth best in the nation and her strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.10 is the third best in Division I. Her 212 strikeouts rank seventh. Groff is one of two pitchers in Division I, joining only Iowa's Jalen Adams, to record 22 victories this season, tying for the third-most in the nation.

Groff's career ERA of 1.20 in 72 appearances over two seasons ranks only behind Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady (0.73) in the national career rankings (Division I only).

The 2025 Summit League Championship gets underway on Wednesday, May 7 in Brookings, S.D. Omaha's first game will take place on Thursday, May 8. Stay tuned for additional information.
