(RV) Omaha Hockey battles for crucial NCHC points in final regular season trip to No. 18 North Dakota

Mar 6, 2025

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – (RV) Omaha Hockey (17-14-1, 13-8-1 NCHC) visits No. 18 North Dakota (18-13-12) and attempts to clinch home ice for the NCHC quarterfinal round in the 2024-25 campaign's final regular season series.

The first of two games is on Friday, March 7 and will air on CBS Sports Network. Puck drop is at 6:36 p.m. Alex Heinert and Dave Starman will have the call, and Shireen Saski will report rinkside on Friday night's national broadcast.

The regular season finale on Saturday, March 8, at 6:07 p.m. will stream live on NCHC.tv, and the audio will be available on the Varsity app or 1290 KOIL AM. Mike Vaillancourt will conduct play-by-play duties, and Terry Leahy will serve as the analyst.

Omaha needs two points in the NCHC standings to clinch home ice for the quarterfinal round of the 2025 NCHC tournament. A win in regulation or overtime in either game this weekend will lock in a playoff series on Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.

As we hit the road for games 33 and 34 of the 2024-25 campaign, it is worth noting that the Mavericks have won three of their last five regular season games against the Fighting Hawks in the month of March. If you include the NCHC tournament, Omaha won three of the last five contests in the third month of the calendar year.

Senior forward Zach Urdahl has lit the lamp 35 times over his four collegiate seasons. 14.29 percent of those goals have come against North Dakota.

The Eau Claire, Wis., native scored the second hat trick in Frozen Faceoff history last March in the semifinal matchup against the Fighting Hawks.

Among active Division I skaters, Urdahl's five goals are tied for the second-most, and his eight points (5G-3A) are tied for the fourth-most. Among active skaters who have played five or fewer games against the Fighting Hawks, Urdahl has the most goals and assists.

As a team, Omaha's power play unit has operated at 34.1 percent since Jan. 12, the second-highest in the conference and tied for the fifth-highest Division I.

Graduate forward Sam Stange (13G) leads the Mavericks in goals this season, and fellow graduate forward Brady Risk (12G) is tied with Urdahl for the second-most goals scored among Omaha skaters.

Of all NCHC graduate students, Stange and Risk rank third and fourth in goals scored, respectively.

Omaha graduate forwards Risk, and Jimmy Glynn has been finding the back of the net often since Feb. 1. The pair are tied, each having scored five goals to have the third-most goals in the NCHC since Feb. 1.

The Mavericks will play in the NCHC quarterfinal round next week. The opponent, location and game times will be announced later.
