OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha bats were silenced for the second straight game, as the Mavericks fell at home in the finale of the opening Summit League series, 6-0 to St. Thomas. Omaha (20-7, 1-2) dropped two of three over the weekend to UST (16-10, 2-1), their first home games of the 2025 season.
The Mavericks play next Wednesday night at
Connie Claussen Field against non-conference foe Nebraska.
Omaha's lefthanded ace
Maddia Groff (11-3) was perfect except for one inning, a four-run second powered by a three-run home run off the bat of Tommies freshman Zoe Trotter. Trotter also homered in the seventh off reliever
Alexis Wiggins, her first two collegiate hits for St. Thomas. St. Thomas righty Ava Kleinfeeldt pitched effectively in the windy conditions, scattering five hits with three strikeouts on just 79 pitches. The Mavericks managed just four fly ball outs in the game.
Emma Durr was the lone Omaha batter to reach base twice, going 2-3.
Maggie O'Brien (1-3),
Sydney Thomason (1-3, DB), and
Katherine Johnson (1-3) had the only other hits for the Mavericks. Omaha was shut out for the second straight game after winning the series opener Saturday, 5-1.
The Summit League's top defense turned in several stellar plays for Omaha. Leftfielder Ava Rongish made a running catch near the track to end the seventh, then made a diving catch for the first out to start the fourth. Third baseman
Sydney Thomason also turned hit-saving plays, throwing out runners from her knees in the fourth and seventh innings.
Mike Heard's defending Summit League champs host Nebraska at
Connie Claussen Field in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, March 26 at 5 p.m. CT. The Mavs resume Summit League play next weekend, hosting North Dakota for a doubleheader Saturday (1:00 p.m. CT) and a single game Sunday (12:00 p.m. CT). All Omaha home games as well as all Summit League games are broadcast on the Summit League Network powered by Midco Sports Plus.
