Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mavericks lose regular season finale at North Dakota State

Omaha opens Summit League tourney Wednesday versus Denver

FARGO, ND - Omaha women's basketball couldn't overcome a dismal third quarter, falling to North Dakota State 76-59 in Fargo to close out the 2024-2025 regular season. Omaha (13-16, 5-11) finished tied with South Dakota for seventh place, but due to tiebreakers the Mavericks are the eighth seed heading into the Summit League Championship tournament in Sioux Falls, SD this week.

The Mavs will now play Denver (2-14, 9-20) in Wednesday's "play-in" game at 4:30 p.m. CT. The winner of that game meets top seed South Dakota State Thursday afternoon.

Omaha was led by senior Grace Cave with 24 points, three rebounds and three assists, giving her four straight 20-plus scoring efforts to close out the regular season. Sophomore Alana Powell scored 16 second half points for the Mavericks, who shot just 34.9% from the field for the game. The loss snapped Omaha's three-game winning streak.

Once again playing with a limited roster due to injuries and illness, the Mavericks trailed by only one point after one and four at half. NDSU used depth to their advantage after intermission, outscoring Omaha 23-9 in the third quarter. They  dominated the boards, outrebounding the Mavs 47-22 and limiting Omaha to just one second chance point in the game, compared to 22 for NDSU. Bison Avery Koenen led all scorers and rebounders with 30 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mavericks' trap helped them climb back into the game in the fourth quarter, as they outscored the Bison 14-3 to start the frame before the Bison began pulled  away.

The Summit League Championship tournament begins Wednesday at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls and runs through March 12. Details and ticket information can be found on the Summit League website.

Mavericks games can be heard live on the Omaha Sports Network from Learfield via The Varsity Network (app and website), as well as over-the-air in the Omaha market on 1180 AM.
