Omaha women's basketball downs Denver in Summit League Championships opener

SIOUX FALLS, SD -  Omaha women's basketball held off Denver 76-68 in the opening game of the Summit League Championships, setting up a day two matchup with the league's unbeaten, top-ranked South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

The Mavericks (14-16, 6-11) led by as many as fifteen points in the opening half before the Pioneers (9-21, 2-15)  rallied in the third and briefly took the lead. Omaha outscored Denver 16-9 in the fourth to seal the win, sparked by sophomore Alana Powell's five points and three assists in the period. She finished with seven points and a game-high four assists.

Senior Ja Harvey's three-pointer at 7:47 of the first quarter gave Omaha a 10-2 lead. Harvey scored 15 first half points, and finished with a team-high 20 to go with three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Senior Grace Cave played all 40 minutes, and finished with 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

"They have the fight in them," head coach Carrie Banks said. "They they weren't ready to be done with the season. We have an amazing group of five seniors."

Senior Aaliyah Moore amassed her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Mavericks outrebounded the Pioneers 36-33, thanks in part to the presence of freshman Harriet Ford inside. She finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

Denver was led by Jordan Jones with a game-high 22 points.

The Mavericks have had success in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, going 6-3 in tournament play under head coach Carrie Banks. Omaha has won four of their last five games overall this season.

Omaha will have a titanic task on Thursday in the second game of day two against top-seed SDSU (16-0, 26-3). The game will start approximately 30 minutes after the first game of the event finishes. Oral Roberts and South Dakota play at noon.
