Softball splits day two of Louisville Slugger Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Omaha softball moved to 13-4 overall as the Mavericks faced Cal Poly and the host of the Louisville Slugger Invitational, Long Beach State, at the LBSU Softball Complex.

Omaha defeated the Mustangs in the opening game of the afternoon 5-2, followed a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Beach.

Game 1

Cal Poly opened the scoring in the third inning with a pair of runs off a single and groundout to open up a 2-0 lead. The Mavericks responded in the following frame with a three-spot that began with an Ava Rongisch RBI single to bring in Maggie O'Brien. A Katherine Johnson double scored Rongisch to erase the Mustangs' lead. Johnson would cap the scoring for Omaha in fourth.

A pair of runs scored by Sammy Schmidt and Haley Wilwerding cemented the 5-2 win for the Mavericks.

O'Brien went 2-for-3 with one walk and Rongisch went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Alyson Edwards made the start, going 2.1 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout. Alexis Wiggins earned her third win of the season in relief tossing 4.2 innings without allowing a run.

Game 2

After getting out to a quick start, the Mavericks were unable to hold on as the Beach came-from-behind to best Omaha in the nightcap –– a true road game for Mike Heard's team. Rylinn Groff singled to center in the fourth to score Schmidt in the fourth to get Omaha on the board. Rongisch singled up the middle in the following inning to score O'Brien and put the Mavericks up 2-0.

LBSU etched three in the sixth to erase the deficit. Omaha was hitless through the first two innings of play.

Maddia Groff made the start, her 11th appearance in a Mavericks uniform. The Omaha native threw six innings allowing three earned runs, striking out eight, in the setback.

Omaha closes-out the Louisville Slugger Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, March 2 at 11 a.m. CT against Utah Tech. There is no livestream.
