LONG BEACH, Calif. - Omaha softball defeated Utah Tech 7-6 in walk-off fashion Sunday, as the Mavericks (14-4) finished-off the Lousiville Slugger Invitational.
Marra Cramer hit two home runs in the game as she now leads the team with seven round-trippers on the young season. Her seven homers also lead the Summit League.
After an early error put Utah Tech up 1-0 in the top of the first, Cramer responded with a solo home run, her first of two on the day. A sacrifice fly by
Maggie O'Brien gave Omaha its first lead of the day as the Mavericks went up 2-1 as
Haley Wilwerding crossed home. Wilwerding would later be the hero as the international tiebreaker runner on second base in the eighth inning and score the game-ending run on a single by
Rylinn Groff.
Before the end-of-game heroics, Utah Tech clawed to a 3-2 lead in the third which led to
Grace Hornbuckle's exit. She was relieved by
Alexis Wiggins.
Down 5-2 in the fifth, O'Brien would score on a wild pitch as
Mike Heard's Mavericks continued to chip away at the deficit. Now a 6-4 ballgame in the bottom of the sixth, Cramer's second home run tied things up as she and
Rylee White rounded the bases.
Utah Tech was unable to get a runner passed third in the eighth inning and R. Groff's single up the middle was all Wilwerding needed to cross home and end the California weekend for Omaha.
Up next is a two-day event in Conway, Ark. as Omaha faces Central Arkansas and Illinois State beginning Friday, March 7.
