CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Omaha softball is off to a 4-0 start on the young 2025 season after a pair of victories Saturday on neutral turf as the Mavericks topped Loyola Chicago and Drake on the second day of the UNI-Dome Tournament.
Omaha's defense was sharp over 13 innings –– recording 39 putouts without an error Saturday.
As the designated home team, Omaha chipped away at a quick 3-0 Loyola Chicago lead en route to the come-from-behind 12-4 run-rule victory over the Ramblers with four extra-base hits. Tacking on a pair of runs in the bottom of the opening frame, Omaha added a run in the each in the second and fourth innings before an explosive bottom of the sixth resulted in eight runs and the immediate victory over Loyola Chicago, Omaha's second over the A-10 member in as many days.
Ava Rongisch etched three RBI and scored a pair of runs herself in the triumph.
Marra Cramer continued her offensive production in the early-morning tilt with a triple, a stolen base and two RBI, both coming on the last play of the game to end it in style.
Maddia Groff made her second appearance for Omaha, coming on in relief for 2.0 innings of work en route to the win. Groff did not allow a base runner, going three-up, three-down in six batters faced with four strikeouts.
Immediately following the game the Mavericks turned around for a matchup with Drake, a 7-1 win for the Mavericks. Drake opened the scoring in the opening inning with an RBI single to left field. Omaha answered back in the home third with a four-spot that began with a two-run homer off the bat of Cramer to score
Sammy Schmidt followed by an
Ava Rongisch double up the middle to score
Maggie O'Brien.
Katherine Johnson contributed a sacrifice fly to score Rongisch.
O'Brien belted an RBI double to right center, scoring two followed by a Rongisch homer, her third of the season, to cap the scoring affair for
Mike Heard's team.
Omaha threw
Alexis Wiggins for the complete game outing against the Bulldogs. Wiggins allowed just one run while logging four strikeouts.
Omaha concludes the tournament tomorrow, Feb. 9 against host Northern Iowa at 3 p.m. CT.
