LONG BEACH, Calif. - Omaha softball (12-3) split the opening day of the Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by Long Beach State as the Mavericks late offensive surge lifted the club to a victory over Pitt in the early game, though Omaha would fall to LMU in the nightcap 2-1.
Omaha's bats got right to work in the bottom of the first inning when
Sydney Thomason hit an RBI single to shortstop to score
Marra Cramer in the first run of the game. Pitt answered back with a run in the fourth to tie things up before a sacrifice fly gave the Panthers their first lead of the game with two outs in the top of the seventh. A solo home run by
Sammy Schmidt tied things up at two before
Emma Durr and
Haley Wilwerding got on base for a three-run walk-off homer by Cramer to give Omaha a 5-2 win over the ACC member.
Maddia Groff picked up her seventh win of the season (7-1). The Omaha native struckout 11, allowing two earned runs on seven Pitt hits.
Against LMU, Omaha did not record a hit until the third inning. The Mavericks opening the scoring in top of the fifth with a solo home run by Thomason, her second RBI of the day. LMU answered in the home sixth with a pair of runs, though Omaha was unable to respond in the 2-1 neutral site defeat.
Alexis Wiggins tossed a complete game for the Mavericks and recorded three strikeouts in the setback.
Omaha returns to action tomorrow, Saturday March 1 to face Cal Poly and Long Beach State beginning at 11 a.m. CT. There is no livestream available.
