Mavericks win third straight game heading to regular season finale

GRAND FORKS, ND - Omaha women's basketball continues to gain momentum heading to the Summit League tournament, winning their third straight game, 76-70 at North Dakota. The Mavericks (13-15, 5-10) won for the fourth time in their last five games to pull even with the Fighting Hawks (10-18, 5-10) and South Dakota in sixth place in the conference standings with one game to play.

Omaha closes out the season at North Dakota State Saturday.

Seniors Ja Harvey and Grace Cave again led the Mavericks, combining for 51 points (Harvey 26, Cave 25), 11 rebounds (Harvey 6, Cave 5) and six assists (three each).

Following a slow first quarter (UND led 14-9), Cave's three-pointer at 6:29 of the second quarter brought Omaha even at 15-15 and the Mavericks never trailed again. The Mavericks  outscored UND 14-3 in the second quarter, as freshman Harriet Ford came off the bench for six points in the final 1:09 of the first half (Aaliyah Moore had one assist and a rebound in that stretch), and Omaha led 26-17 at intermission. Ford finished with ten points on 5-8 shooting, and grabbed five rebounds. Moore totaled 10 boards, her fifth double-digit rebounding game of the year. She also scored five points and dished out three assists.

The Fighting Hawks made just 1-13 field goals in the second quarter, and Omaha led by as many as 12 points as late as 8:45 of the third quarter before North Dakota finally started making shots. The Fighting Hawks were led by Kiera Pemberton's 26. Pemberton brought her team to within three with 1:15 to play at 68-65, but Cave and Harvey made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Combined with Omaha's 71-66 win at Baxter Arena January 2 to start the Summit League season, the Mavericks swept a team for the only time this season with the win.

Moore and fifth-year Katie Keitges had five points each, Morgann Gardner had four points and four rebounds and Alana Powell closed out the scoring with one point. Omaha's roster is down to nine players, with several of those still affected by illness or injury, but their seniors have led the surge for the Mavs heading to the end of the season.

Omaha closes out the regular season Saturday at North Dakota State at 1:00 p.m. CT before playing in the Summit League Championship tournament (March 9-12).
