Softball tops Akron and Sam Houston Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Omaha softball began the weekend in the Lone Star State with a pair of victories as the Mavericks (11-1) extended their win streak to seven-straight games in non-conference play.

Omaha scored 15 runs over the two games, beginning with an 11-0 five-inning victory over Akron to start the day. Mike Heard's Mavericks followed up that performance with a 4-2 win over Sam Houston.

Sammy Schmidt batted in six Omaha runs over the two games, including a grand slam on a 2-2 count to deep right field in the second inning of the game against the Zips.

Sydney Thomason belted her second homer of the season as well in the opening game of the trip in the first inning, scoring Maggie O'Brien.

A pair of Mavericks homered in the nightcap with Haley Wilwerding (first) and Emma Durr (first) rounding the bases against Sam Houston.

Maddia Groff made the game one start for Omaha allowing one hit in three innings en route to the victory, her sixth of the young campaign. Groff later earned the save (first) against the Bearkats, while Alyson Edwards moved to 3-0 on the campaign.

The Mavericks return to action on Sunday, Feb. 23 against Michigan State at 9 a.m. CT.

Season tickets for home games at Connie Claussen Field are on-sale now at OMavs.com/Tix.
