FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Omaha softball went a perfect 5-0 this weekend in the FGCU Invitational following a weekend-ending 5-0 victory Sunday over Florida Gulf Coast. With the win, Omaha moves to 9-1 on the season.
Ava Rongisch got the scoring started early for the Mavericks as she grounded out to second, scoring
Marra Cramer.
Sammy Schmidt continued her dominance in Fort Meyers as the sophomore singled up the middle to score
Sydney Thomason and give Omaha a 2-0 advantage in the third.
Thomason would bat in a run in the following inning with a single through the left side to score
Rylinn Groff and extend the Omaha lead to three.
Schmidt would score in the fifth off a
Haley Wilwerding single to left center and the scoring affair would be capped by a sacrifice fly off
Maggie O'Brien's bat to send home
Emma Durr and put Omaha up five.
After keeping the Eagles' offense at bay most of the day,
Maddia Groff faced trouble in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on. Getting a groundout and a pair of strikeouts, Groff made it through her fourth complete game unscathed as she pitched her third shutout as a Maverick to move to 5-1. Groff logged 11 strikeouts in the outing and did not allow an earned run in 17.0 innings pitched over the weekend.
Schmidt finished the day 3-for-4 while
Marra Cramer had Omaha's only extra-base hit, a double to left which started the game.
Omaha out-hit the home club by six, 12-6.
The Mavericks hit the field again next week with a matchup against Michigan State on Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. CT, the first of five games in San Antonio.
