FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Omaha softball (8-1) continued its dominance in the Sunshine State Saturday as the Mavericks logged their second win of the campaign over Seton Hall, followed by a true road victory against Florida Gulf Coast.
Omaha scored 14 runs over the two games as the Mavericks move to 4-0 on the weekend.
After toppling BIG EAST member Seton Hall yesterday, Omaha erased an early 1-0 Pirates lead in the second with a pair of runs courtesy of
Sammy Schmidt to score
Ava Rongisch and
Rylee White, scoring Schmidt. Schmidt would log an RBI single to left center in the sixth scoring
Haley Wilwerding from second base. Schmidt would score again in the sixth on an error, followed by an RBI single from
Marra Cramer which saw
Gabby Salazar round third on a throwing error to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
Omaha knocked nine hits while holding Seton Hall to just four. Aly Edwards made the start for Omaha and earned the victory after throwing 5.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits.
Grace Hornbuckle came out of the bullpen in relief in the sixth to toss 1.2 frames, facing eight batters with one strikeout.
Schmidt finished her day 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Schmidt and
Maggie O'Brien each swiped a base in the matchup.
Omaha struck first in the nightcap and never looked back as
Mike Heard's Mavericks took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and kept it rolling en route to an 8-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast, the hosts of this weekend's FGCU Invitational. After a Cramer single up the middle gave Omaha its first baserunner of the night, an O'Brien single to the outfield moved Cramer to third, followed by O'Brien stealing second. With two runners in scoring position,
Sydney Thomason belted a double to right center, clearing the bases and giving the Mavericks a 2-0 advantage.
Thomason later scored on an error and the scoring bonanza ended with Rongisch crossing home on a double down the left field line by
Emma Durr.
Alexis Wiggins tossed the complete game for Omaha and retired the Eagles in order to start the first.
O'Brien and Cramer would combine for Omaha's fifth run of the game. Omaha was held scoreless until the top of the sixth when Edwards blasted a two-run home run hugging the left field foul pole to make it 7-0 in favor of the reigning Summit League champions. For Edwards, the home run was the first of her collegiate career.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Schmidt would seal the deal for Omaha as Schmidt touched the eighth run of the game home for the red and black as Omaha would go on to win 8-2.
A 1-2-3 home seventh would put the game, Omaha's fourth victory in a row, in the books as the Mavericks get set for a rematch tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 16 at 11:30 a.m. CT to close the Florida trip.
O'Brien's three hits in the game tie the most by a Maverick in a game this season.
Wiggins struck out three en route to her second win of 2025.
