Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mavericks can't slow South Dakota State's roll

OMAHA, Neb. - A spirited Omaha team, thinned by injuries, couldn't withstand the relentless attack of the Summit League's defending champions, falling 93-63 to (RV) South Dakota State at Baxter Arena in women's basketball.

The Mavericks (9-13, 1-8) fell behind 8-0 to start the game, and the Jackrabbits (19-3, 9-0) never looked back. Omaha bounced back and played SDSU even much of the rest of the quarter as Grace Cave scored 5 of her team-high 18 in the opening frame.  But the Jackrabbits exploded from behind the three-point line in the game (13-35) and Omaha wasn't able to run down the lead held by the top-ranked team in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll. The Mavericks have dropped eight straight.

Omaha played one of their best games in recent weeks in terms of turnovers, but SDSU made few mistakes, turning it over only once in the first half before committing just 9 TOs to 16 for Omaha. The Mavericks have been hit with a rash of injuries in recent weeks, losing Cora Olsen and Paige Horne for the season and Kyana Weir for an undetermined period of time. Second-leading scorer Ja Harvey remains day-to-day after missing the last four games due to concussion protocol.

The Mavericks went on an 8-0 run in the fourth, as Cave dished out three of her six assists. With 308 in her career, the senior from Weeping Water is six assists shy of becoming the school's career assist leader in the DI Era. She finished with 18 pts., 3 reb., 6 assists and 3 steals.

Alana Powell scored in double figures for the third straight game (10 points), her third game as a starter since the Olsen injury. The sophomore has five double-digit games this year. Junior Lauren Perry added 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, while freshman Harriet Ford led the Mavericks on the boards with 6 rebounds and 6 points.

Omaha has two road games in Summit League play this week. They travel to St. Paul for a Wednesday night matchup against St. Thomas (11-11, 3-6), February 5, at 7:00 p.m. CT. The Tommies lost 81-74 at North Dakota State Saturday. They then visit the Roos in Kansas City Saturday, February 8, at 1:00 p.m. CT. Both games can be heard on The Varsity Network app and website, with Wednesday's game also available on KOIL 1290 AM. Brent Weber is the play-by-play voice for Mavericks women's basketball. Broadcasts begin with the FNBO Pregame Show approximately 15:00 before tip-off.
