Mavericks can't overcome hot-shooting Tommies

UPDATE: Saturday game at KC to air on 1290 KOIL

ST. PAUL, MN. - Omaha's conference struggles continued on the road at St. Thomas where they couldn't overcome the Tommies' blistering first half shooting en route to a 75-62 win. The Mavericks (9-14, 1-8) fell for the eighth straight game.

Omaha and St. Thomas (13-10, 5-5) both shot well in the opening half, but the Tommies took command from behind the three-point arc, making 8 of 12 threes to take a 42-31 lead to intermission. Omaha made 43.4% of their shots for the game, but UST hit on 53.6% from the field, 52.6% (10-19) threes.

The Mavericks were led by senior Grace Cave with 15 points, 2 steals and 1 blocked shot. Freshman Harriet Ford made 5-10 shots from the field for 10 points to go along with a game-high 7 rebounds. Fifth-year Katie Keitges made 3-5 threes for 9 points to go with 5 rebounds. Senior Ja Harvey returned from injury to play 23 minutes, dishing out an Omaha career-high 7 assists to go with 7 points and 3 steals.

Once again the Maverick reduced their turnover margin, snatching 11 steals as the Tommies turned it over 22 times to Omaha's 15. But Omaha's depth, challenged by a thinning roster, led to only four second chance points, as St. Thomas outrebounded the Mavs 36-24.

Omaha next visits the Roos in Kansas City Saturday, February 8, at 1:00 p.m. CT. The Mavericks lost by just one point in their most recent meeting, 66-65 in Omaha.
