NEW HAVEN, Conn. - (RV) Omaha Hockey had the puck in its offensive end for most of Friday night, but Yale was able to hold on for a 2-1 win.
Omaha finished with a 31-17 advantage in shots on goal, but Yale kept the Mavericks scoreless over the final 58 minutes.
It marked the first time this season that Omaha (5-8) has played an unranked opponent. Yale improved to 4-4.
The night got off to a great start for the Mavericks as Max Pellerin scored 70 seconds into the game.
Griffin Ludtke and
Luke Woodworth earned assists on the goal.
For Pellerin, it was his team-leading sixth goal this season and for Ludtke it was his ninth assist, another team best.
But Yale tied it midway through the first period and took the 2-1 lead with 8:13 left in the second.
Omaha went on the power play twice in the opening five minutes of the third period, but goalie Jack Stark kept Yale in front. Omaha was 0-of-3 on power plays for the night.
Omaha mounted one final rally in the last minute after pulling goalie
Simon Latkoczy off the ice. The Mavs attempted a flurry of shots in front of the net with about 35 seconds, but Stark finished his standout night as he finished with 30 saves.
Latkoczy had 15 saves for the Mavericks.
Friday was Omaha and Yale's first matchup since 2008.
The squads will finish the series at 6 p.m. CT tomorrow, Nov. 29.
