DULUTH, Minn. - No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth got a hat trick from defenseman Ty Hanson as the Bulldogs knocked off (RV) Omaha Hockey 5-2 in their NCHC series opener Friday night.
Omaha (4-5, 2-3 NCHC) was within 3-2 entering the third period, but Hanson scored his last two goals in the first 8:30 of the final period to secure the win.
Omaha took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as six minutes into the game
Joel Plante scored off a pass in front of the net from
Brett Hyland. It was Plante's first collegiate goal.
The Bulldogs (11-2, 4-1) outshot Omaha 11-2 in the final 13 minutes of the first period, but
Simon Latkoczy made 14 saves in the period to keep the Mavs in front.
Minnesota-Duluth (11-2, 4-1), which entered the night averaging 3.6 goals per game, got its offense going early in the second period as the Bulldogs scored three times in the first nine minutes of the period.
Duluth took a 2-1 lead on a goal with 15:48 left in the period. Omaha answered 21 seconds later when
Jacob Slipec collected the puck in the faceoff circle and delivered a shot to back of the net to tie it again.
It was Slipec's second goal of the season.
Duluth regained the lead on Callum Arnott's goal midway through the second period. Duluth then started the third period on a power play and increased its lead to 4-2 just 22 seconds into the period on Hanson's second goal of the night.
Hanson, who had a total of three goals in Duluth's first 12 games, added his third goal with 11:30 left.
Omaha went on to have a man advantage three times in the third period, but the Mavs finished the night 0-of-4 on power plays. Duluth had a 43-25 advantage in shots on goal for the night as Latkoczy had 38 saves.
Omaha and Minnesota-Duluth finish the weekend series tomorrow, Nov. 15 as the puck drops at 6:07 p.m. CT on NCHC.tv and 1290 KOIL and the Varsity Network.
