DULUTH, Minn. - (RV) Omaha Hockey's first shutout of the season came against the No. 3 team in the country.
Dawson Cowan made 32 saves in leading the Mavericks to a 2-0 road win over Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday night.
Omaha improves to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in the NCHC. All five wins have come against ranked opponents.
It was the second start this season for Cowan, who also got a win at then-No. 15 Colorado College.
Cowan made seven saves in the opening period, but he and the Omaha defense was at its best in the second period.
Duluth (11-3, 4-2) grabbed the momentum Friday by scoring three times in the first nine minutes of the second period. But on Saturday, Cowan made 17 saves in the second.
Omaha grabbed the lead two minutes into the second period when Myles Hillman poked home a rebound for his second goal of the season.
Griffin Ludtke was credited with his eighth assist on the season.
Duluth put pressure on the Maverick defense the rest of the period, but Cowan was up to the task. Duluth was 0 of 4 on power-play opportunities in the first two periods and 0 of 5 overall.
Cowan had 28 saves when Omaha doubled its lead on a
Marc Lajoie goal with 13 minutes left. Lajoie scored on the power play as he redirected a shot by Aidan de la Gorgendiere.
