Women’s Basketball welcomes Avila for exhibition

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Women's Basketball is set to welcome Avila to Sapp Fieldhouse for an exhibition at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26.

Avila is led by former Omaha three-year starter Remy (Davenport) Wolfe. The NAIA school plays in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

It's a new day in Omaha and a new season of Maverick Women's Basketball is upon us. Vice Chancellor / Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell announced Jamie Carey as the new head coach of the Mavs on May 4. Carey comes to the Mavs from UTSA where she served as the associate head women's basketball coach since 2021.

Carey rounded out her staff with the hiring of assistant coaches Leah Szabla, Claire Gritt, Madi Townley and Dan Levine.

Three Mavs return for another year: sophomore guard Daria Shelby (Canton, Mich.), junior forward Ali Stephens (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and junior forward Cora Olsen (Omaha, Neb.). Twelve newcomers join the squad, nine freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and one fifth-year.

The exhibition at Sapp Fieldhouse is free for fans to attend. The game will broadcast live on the Varsity Network with Brent Weber on the call. Omaha begins the regular-season on Monday, Nov. 3 at K-State.
