DENVER – (RV) Omaha Hockey (14-10-0, 10-4-0 NCHC) hits the road as it heads to No. 5 Denver (18-6-0, 7-5-0 NCHC) for a two-game series and 2024 Frozen Faceoff rematch. Friday's contest starts at 7 p.m. MT/8 p.m. CT, and Saturday's game begins at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT. Both games will be streaming on NCHC.tv, with Brad Thompson handling play-by-play duties, and the audio will be on the Varsity app or 1290 KOIL AM, with Mike Vaillancourt and Terry Leahy on the call.
These NCHC foes last met in the NCHC's 2024 Frozen Faceoff Championship, where the Pioneers took a 4-1 victory. Omaha looks for revenge as it lands in the "Mile-High City" with the momentum of three straight series sweeps of NCHC opponents to take on the defending national champions.
The Mavericks have won seven of their last eight games and nine of the last 10 NCHC matchups they have played.
Omaha's six-game winning streak is historic, tied for the fourth-longest in program history. In the NCHC era (since 2013-14), the Mavericks have only surpassed six straight wins once, with seven from Oct. 3-30, 2021, which was also tied for the second-longest streak in Omaha history.
In program history, the Mavericks have won six or more games only six times (including the active streak).
Since Dec. 1, the Mavericks have accumulated nine wins, tied for the second-most in the country and outright lead the NCHC.
Last week, Omaha swept then-No. 17 St. Cloud State as it had eight different skaters net goals.
In the NCHC era (since 2013-14), Omaha's 10-4-0 record in conference play in 2024-25 is the best it has been through its first 14 NCHC games.
Senior forward
Zach Urdahl led all Mavericks in scoring as he potted two goals in Friday's 6-3 victory over the Huskies. Fellow Eau Claire, Wis., native to Urdahl, graduate forward
Sam Stange set a season high in assists for Omaha on Friday as he tacked on three.
Urdahl enters this series with 23 goals scored in his career on Fridays, tied for the sixth-most among active Division I players.
The 14 returning Mavericks from last season are very familiar with Denver. With 14 newcomers added to Omaha's roster this season, five of them are transfer students. Some are accustomed to the Pioneers and have even found some success.
Graduate forward
Brady Risk has played six career games against the Pioneers and has made them count.
The former Alaska Nanook will play his first game against Denver in an Omaha sweater. He enters the series with 1.33 points per game against Denver, having tallied eight in his collegiate career against the defending champions.
Risk's eight career points against the Pioneers are tied for the fifth-most among active players.
Last season, on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, Risk (2A) and
Harrison Israels (2G) each tallied two points against Denver with Alaska Fairbanks. Risk assisted on one of Israels's two goals in the game.
It is also worth noting that Risk's five game-winning goals on the road are tied for sixth-most among active skaters. Since Dec. 1, Risk's six goals have been tied for the fourth-most in the conference.
Omaha's 40 goals since Dec. 1 in 12 GP ranks second in the NCHC and is tied for 11th nationally.
Junior goaltender
Simon Latkoczy earned his 40th career victory last Friday night and his 41st on Saturday night to lead Omaha to six wins straight.
The Trencin, Slovakia native became just the fourth Maverick in program history to earn 40 or more career victories. Additionally, the 5-foot-11, 177-pound netminder is moving up Omaha's all-time wins list as the season progresses, currently sitting with the fourth-most wins.
Latkoczy is four wins away from tying
Jerad Kaufmann's 45 and five away from recording the third-most wins among all Omaha goaltenders in program history.
Junior defenseman
Jacob Guevin is two points from tying current Omaha head coach
Mike Gabinet for 12th all-time among Omaha defensemen and fifth among Maverick blueliners from Canada.
Next week, the Mavericks host Minnesota Duluth in a two-game series on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8. Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. on the Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.
