Cave reaches milestone but Mavericks lose to KC

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha senior Grace Cave became the second player in the school's DI history to surpass 300 career assists, but it wasn't enough to hold off Kansas City in Summit League play at Baxter Arena.

Kansas City (8-14, 4-3) took advantage of Omaha miscues, scoring 26 points off 25 turnovers en route to the 66-65 comeback win. Omaha (9-11, 1-6) led for all but 3:52 seconds of the game, but the Roos rode Alayna Contreras' 32 points to outscore the Mavs 21-13 in the fourth quarter. It was Omaha's sixth straight loss, all in Summit League play.

The Mavericks opened a 14-point lead at 5:34 of the third period when Cave set up sophomore guard Alana Powell for the three-pointer that gave Omaha a 46-32 lead. It was Cave's fifth assist of the game and 300th of her career, making her the second Mavericks player in the school's DI era to surpass 300 assists, joining Mikaela Shaw (314 assists, 2013-2017). She finished with 6 assists, a team-leading 21 points as well as 2 steals, 2 rebounds and a blocked shot. She played all 40 minutes, the only Maverick to do so this season.

Omaha was playing their second consecutive game without two starters, sophomore Cora Olsen (out for the season with a hip injury) and senior Ja Harvey (day-to-day under concussion protocol). Senior Aaliyah Moore totaled her second double-double of the season (12 points, 11 rebounds), joined in double figures by Powell (12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists), who made her first start for Omaha.

Wednesday night they visit Oral Roberts (15-5, 9-1) at 7:00 p.m. CT, before hosting South Dakota State Saturday at Baxter Arena at 2:00 p.m. CT.  Tickets for all Omaha home games are available at omavs.com/tix.

Omaha games can be heard on the Omaha Sports Network from Learfield via the Varsity Network. All remaining Mavericks regular season games will be televised on the Summit League Network. Brent Weber handles the play-by-play for the Mavericks. The FNBO Pregame Show begins 15:00 prior to tip-off.
