Hockey routs Miami 8-1 in weekend finale

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha Hockey (5-7-0, 3-3-0 NCHC) finished its successful weekend sweep against Miami (3-11-2, 0-6-0 NCHC) with an 8-1 victory on the Kemp Ice at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks opened the game with three goals and tacked on four more in the second period.

Junior goaltender Simon Latkoczy played 48:43 of the contest, making 17 saves and allowing one goal. Sophomore goaltender Will Craig played 10:04 and made four saves in his collegiate debut.

When putting pucks on the net, Omaha outshot Miami 43-22. The Mavericks also scored three power play goals in the effort.

This was the first time Omaha had scored at least eight goals in an NCHC matchup since Dec. 3, 2020, when it beat Western Michigan 10-2 at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks opened the three-goal first period at the 9:30 mark with sophomore forward Charlie Lurie taking a pass off his skate and snatching it to net it from the middle of the right circle on the power play.

Just a few moments later graduate forward Sam Stange grabbed a takeaway in the Miami end and took a shot in front of the left side of the crease that went over the glove side of Ethan Dahlmeir.

Junior forward Tyler Rollwagen's stick was able to connect on a shot by junior defenseman Griffin Ludtke from the right circle and right in front of Dahlmeir at 18:56 into the opening period on another Maverick power play.

5:27 seconds into the middle frame, freshman forward Chase LaPinta was able to seemingly slow the game down by carrying a two-on-one rush and connecting with Stange, who put up a stealthy goal in the camouflage jersey on Military Appreciation Night.

However, the fourth shorthanded goal of the season and the second of the series came at the 7:21 mark of the second period when Cam Mitchell was fed by Stange and senior defenseman and captain Nolan Krenzen. Mitchell rushed down the ice for his second goal of the season and pushed the Mavericks to a comfortable 5-0 lead not even halfway through the game.

Graduate forward Jimmy Glynn won a faceoff, and freshman forward Myles Hilman looked like he was on Olympic speed skating trials as he rushed down the ice off the draw and led the rush down the ice on the right side to net one to make it 6-0.
Miami then scored its only series goal at 14:26 into the second courtesy of junior forward Blake Mesenburg.

Glynn then scored his fifth career goal against the RedHawks. He netted one off a Ludtke pass from the bottom circle to the left side of the crease on the power play with only .8 seconds remaining in the period.

Among active skaters, Glynn is tied for the fifth most goals against Miami with five.

Finally, the Mavericks tacked on their 11th (and final) goal of the weekend when graduate forward Brady Risk did great defensive work off a turnover and quickly pushed a pass behind him that found graduate forward Harrison Israels for a great one-timer that he potted for his second goal of the season.

Several 10-minute penalties were handed out late in the final frame.

Omaha will take a break over Thanksgiving weekend but will be back in action when they travel to face NCHC foe St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn. The Games are set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 and 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.
