TEMPE, Ariz. – (RV) Omaha Hockey (2-6-0, 0-2-0 NCHC) is slated to play two games on the campus of Arizona State University against the (RV) Sun Devils (3-6-1, 0-2-0 NCHC) this Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. MT/8 p.m. CT and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. MT/6 p.m. CT on NCHC.tv.
The teams enter Friday's contest after both dropping their opening games in the NCHC schedule.
While Arizona State and Omaha have battled 11 times prior, this will be the first time the two have met in NCHC play. The Mavericks lead the series 6-4-1 all time, with eight of the 11 matchups in Omaha, Neb.
On Jan. 6, 2024, Omaha dropped its most recent matchup against Arizona State in overtime 1-2 when now sophomore forward Kyle Smolen scored the game-winning goal. Sophomore forward
Tanner Ludtke scored the lone goal for the Mavericks in that contest.
However, before that game, this will only be the second and third time the programs have played in the 2020s. 10 of the 11 matchups occurred between Dec. 19, 2015, and Dec. 22, 2019.
Omaha is led by senior forward
Zach Urdahl in goals (4) and points (6). Junior defenseman
Jacob Guevin leads the Mavericks in assists (3).
The Sun Devils have allowed an average and scored an average of 2.60 goals per game. Both rank sixth in the NCHC. Senior forward Ryan Kirwan leads Arizona State in goals (6), and graduate student defenseman Noah Beck leads the team in assists (10), points (12) and power play goals (2).
When it comes to special teams, these two teams have one very similar strength.
Both teams come into play tied in the penalty kill percentage at .857, tied for fifth in the NCHC. Omaha has killed 18 of 21 opponent power plays, while Arizona State has given up four goals through 28 opportunities for opponents with a man advantage.
As for Omaha, it scored two power play goals in its last time out against then-No. 14 Western Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 9.
The Sun Devils also lead the NCHC in shorthanded goals with three. Omaha has scored two shorthanded goals this season. Arizona State also has the lowest faceoff-winning percentage in the conference at .468.
Next weekend, Omaha hosts Miami (OH) in two games on Friday, Nov. 22 and Saturday, Nov. 23 with puck drop set at 7:07 p.m. in both games.
