No. 4 Omaha Hosts No. 5 ORU in Summit League Quarterfinals

Nov 1, 2024

Leading Off
The Mavericks (10-2-5, 4-1-3) officially enter the 2024 Summit League Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will now host their own quarterfinal match vs. No. 5 Oral Roberts (8-7-4, 3-2-3) this Saturday at 5 p.m.

Quick Kicks
• Omaha secured the No. 4 seed last Sunday with a 2-1 win over Kansas City in the regular season finale and a loss by ORU to South Dakota State later that day.
Alyssa Kellar opened scoring in the match with a goal in the 56th minute, only for the Roos to follow up a few minutes later to tie it. It would later fall to Lindsey Birch to put the Mavericks back on top when she subbed in at 68:00 and three minutes later snuck one past the goalie to make it 2-1.
• With this win, the Mavericks ended the regular season with a six-match lossless streak.
• The Summit League announced its All-Summit honors on Thursday with the Mavericks taking home seven awards. Regan Zimmers headlined the group by earning her second-consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award, in addition to her program record third First Team All-Summit selection. Led by Zimmers, the Omaha defense posted a .706 GAA which ranked 32nd in the nation. The Mavericks also totaled eight shutouts this season.
Grace Ostergaard and Alyssa Kellar also earned First Team honors. For Ostergaard this was her second year in a row making the First Team after earning Second Team honors her first three seasons. She is now the first Maverick in history to make the All-Summit Team five times. As for Kellar, she followed up her 2023 All-Newcomer selection with a career-high six goals and 15 points. She now has 11 goals, eight assists, and 30 points in her first two years in Omaha.
• Rounding out the group are Grace Crockett and Meg Nemnich, who are both first-time honorees after each making the Second Team, and Cece Behrens who earned an Honorable Mention.
• Omaha's goalkeeping duo of Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen and Maja Baun also put up impressive numbers this year, leading the league and finishing 12th in the nation with a .860 save percentage. Mia also led the Summit with just a .578 GAA and a .872 save percentage.

Scouting the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles had a chance to overtake Omaha for the No. 4 seed on the final day of the season, but a 1-0 shutout at the hands of SDSU kept them behind the Mavericks at 8-7-4 with a 3-2-3 conference record. Overall, ORU ranked fourth in the league in scoring with 1.474 goals per game, but on defense were only ranked eighth with 1.53 goals allowed per game.

Golden Eagles to Watch
Oral Roberts took home five All-Summit honors this year, led by Julia Thasaphong who made First Team All-Summit. Thasaphong was the team's top scorer with six goals and 16 points, both of which ranked in the top five in the conference.

Samantha Guzman and Alexa Riefer both picked up Second Team honors. Guzman was tied with Thasaphong for the team lead in goals with six and finished with 14 points overall. Meanwhile, Riefer was one of the top goalkeepers in the league, leading the Summit with 94 saves and finishing second with 4.95 saves per game.

Earning an Honorable Mention was defender Alani Chaple, who recorded a goal and an assist and started all 19 games this year while finishing fourth on the team in minutes played with 1141. Finally, fellow defender Hannah Voskuhl made the All-Newcomer team after appearing in all 19 games, totaling 1219 minutes, and scoring one goal.

Series History
Following their 1-1 tie back on October 20, the Mavericks and Golden Eagles remain an even 6-6-2 in the all-time series. Since starting off 0-3, though, Omaha has a 6-3-2 advantage since 2016. With less than three minutes left in the game, Cece Behrens notched the game-tying goal for the Mavericks in their last meeting.
