LAS VEGAS - Senior forward
Zach Urdahl kicked off No. 15 Omaha's season with a 3-2 overtime win against No. 15 Massachusetts at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Urdahl picked up where he left off last season as the team's top goal scorer when he tied the game in the second period and ultimately scored the game on an unassisted breakaway in overtime.
Minutemen senior forward Lucas Mercuri opened the scoring at the 18:15 mark of the first period on a power play.
Junior forward
Tyler Rollwagen and defenseman
Jacob Guevin were able to pick up assists on the Mavericks' inaugural goal of 2024-25.
The contest saw nine combined penalties through the first two periods of action. Still, each team only capitalized on the power play once on seven combined opportunities at the man advantage.
Omaha opened the third period with two power play opportunities through the first 5:46 but could not find the back of the net despite putting up three shots.
A low-scoring event picked up again when junior forward
Jacob Slipec scored for the Mavericks at 16:56 in the third period.
However, sophomore forward Aydar Suniev tied the game at two a piece with under two minutes remaining.
The game was ultimately decided in a three-on-three overtime courtesy of Urdahl.
Junior goaltender
Simon Latkoczy was given the nod on opening night and didn't disappoint as he made 24 saves on 26 shots faced.
Omaha will play for the 2024 Men's Ice Breaker championship tomorrow night at either 4 P.M. or 7:30 P.M. against Air Force or No. 5 Minnesota, depending on the matchup winner.
