LAS VEGAS - No. 15 Omaha got its second overtime win in a row to start the season and bested No. 5 Minnesota in the 2024 Ice Breaker Championship, a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Championship Sioux Falls Regional Semifinal.
This is the second Ice Breaker title and third appearance for the Mavericks, as they won in 2009, serving as the host team in Omaha.
Junior goaltender
Simon Latkoczy was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. He also set a career-high with 53 saves tonight.
Latkoczy was tested early in the opening period. Latkoczy made 20 saves but allowed Minnesota's Mason Nevers one goal at the 14:26 mark of the first period to trail 1-0.
While shorthanded, graduate forward
Sam Stange remarkably tied the game at one a-piece at the 13:09 mark of the second period.
Stange and junior defenseman
Dylan Gratton picked up their first points as Mavericks with on the shorthanded goal.
The stellar showing between the pipes from Latkoczy pushed Omaha into overtime, where junior defenseman
Jacob Guevin scored the tournament-winner goal with an assist from sophomore forward
Tanner Ludtke.
Apart from Latkoczy, senior forward
Zach Urdahl, who had two goals against UMass, was also named to the 2024 Ice Breaker's All-Tournament Team.
